| Event Description |
Volunteers will help to create a water containment system on plateaus through the preserve that will keep water from running down the hillsides and will instead help it to soak into the soil to replenish the springs and creeks on the preserve. The first stage of this concept was begun during October 2008. Some of the work involves raking soil and loose rock into a berm that follows the curvature of the slope on these plateaus. Several feet below these berms, more loose rocks will be stacked to form berms without soil. There's no chopping, digging, or heavy lifting...just raking and stacking small rocks.
Be sure to wear sturdy work shoes or boots and bring a good pair of work gloves. A good windbreaker or rain jacket may come in handy if the weather is fairly cool or rainy.
You'll also need to bring your lunch and plenty of water to the work site. We'll have a water cooler available to refill your bottles.
Afterward, everyone will be treated to a feast of tamales, beans, chips & salsa plus an assortment of beverages.
