The Trail Tamers have been visiting the Davis Mountains area since 1996. In April of 2010 we will return to this beautifully diverse Nature Conservancy Preserve in the Davis Mountains of west Texas to work on several of their trails.

The modern McIvor Learning Center (MLC) (located near the entrance) will house approximately 14 to 16 volunteers (two dormitory type rooms with bunk beds, plus shower and toilet facilities) and space is nearby for car camping. The MLC also has WiFi for those who are interested. All meals and snacks will be provided. Work normally begins at 8:00 AM and is over at 5:00 PM, when we return to our living spaces.
With regard to the weather, expect the unexpected. Click here for a weather link. The visitor center and main camping area is at about 4000 feet. Be prepared for rain or bright sunshine. Be prepared for both hot and cold, so dress in layers. One year, we experienced 28 degrees early one morning and the 60’s on the mountain in the afternoon.
The actual work will include trail improvements & maintenance near the visitor center and elsewhere in the preserve. The trail maintenance on the lower trails would be rated light to moderate with some being more difficult. The goals of this trip is to have safe fun and accomplish the tasks related to trail construction and maintenance. We take frequent breaks and don't expect folks to hurt themselves. We also generally share some cooking responsibilities.
Here is a link to the list of recommended individual supplies and equipment. Also, George Mading, our experienced Crew Leader, advises to take this trip as an opportunity improve your fitness. If you already walk and exercise good, do more. If you are not in reasonable physical condition, it is not to late to start.
We will have a planning session to work out the final details about one week before the trip. For more details, please call George at 512-560-2540.
